Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Environmental sustainability has become a critical global priority, with significant emphasis placed on addressing issues like deforestation, pollution, and climate change. Films, as a powerful medium of communication, have been utilized worldwide to raise awareness and inspire action toward sustainable practices. In Nigeria, including Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, environmental challenges such as land degradation and waste management remain significant concerns (Ibrahim & Adeyemi, 2023). Films have the capacity to engage audiences emotionally and intellectually, making complex issues like sustainability accessible and relatable (Abubakar & Oyeleke, 2024). Recent research highlights the growing use of storytelling in films to promote eco-friendly behaviors and advocate for sustainable development (Yusuf, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of environmental campaigns, Doma faces persistent challenges in achieving sustainable environmental practices. The role of films in promoting awareness and behavioral change regarding environmental sustainability remains underexplored in this region. This study investigates how films can be used as tools for fostering eco-conscious attitudes and practices in Doma (Aliyu, 2024).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To explore the themes of environmental sustainability portrayed in films viewed in Doma.
  2. To evaluate the impact of these films on public attitudes toward environmental practices.
  3. To identify barriers to the effective use of films in promoting sustainability in the area.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What themes of environmental sustainability are depicted in films popular in Doma?
  2. How do these films influence public attitudes toward environmental practices?
  3. What challenges limit the effectiveness of films in promoting sustainability in Doma?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Films significantly influence public attitudes toward environmental sustainability in Doma.
  2. Positive portrayals of eco-friendly behaviors in films encourage sustainable practices.
  3. Limited access to environmentally focused films diminishes their impact on behavioral change.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study provides valuable insights into leveraging films as tools for environmental advocacy, offering recommendations for filmmakers, policymakers, and environmental organizations to enhance community engagement.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is confined to the use of films in promoting environmental sustainability in Doma Local Government Area, Nasarawa State.
